April isn’t just the beginning of spring – it also starts the garage/estate sale, flea market, and antique show season. All of these are great places to score some amazing depression glass finds whether you are staying around Michigan, or traveling elsewhere. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when shopping this spring and summer. Don’t forget to bring your best depression glass find to our anniversary dinner in September. It is amazing to see the deals people get!
Get there early. If a sale opens at 8am, it is best to be there before the doors open. Most of those glass deals are going to be scooped up in the first hour by other collectors and dealers. While you might find vendors are willing to negotiate more towards the end of the day, most anything really good is long gone by then.
Bring wrapping materials with you and/or in the car. Many times flea market vendors are not equipped to properly wrap your purchase. Nothing is more heart breaking than scoring an amazing depression glass find, only to have it damaged as you carry it around or on the drive home. It is always a good idea to have a canvas bag on you with some sheets of newspaper, and a box in the car with some wrapping materials.
Split up. If two of you are shopping together, your odds of finding something great improve if you start at opposite ends and work towards a common area. It also decreases your chances of getting into a fight with your best friend.
Don’t get too caught up in the moment and forget to inspect your glass. Many a depression glass collector has purchased a piece in too much of a hurry and didn’t notice a crack or other damage until they got home. While you want to keep moving and not dilly dally, take the time to make sure whatever you are buying is not damaged beyond what you are willing to accept.
Good luck to everyone, and happy depression glass hunting in Pure Michigan and beyond.
