We’ve all been there – you either found a great piece of depression glass at a garage sale or inherited one from a family member…but it is cloudy. What should you do? We’ve read dozens of tips online from denture cleaning tablets to baking soda solutions as methods of cleaning cloudy depression glass. But most of these tips don’t seem to work. What is the best method? One of our annual show dealers, Jack Peacock, recently posted this tip in a depression glass forum:
Soak the glass overnight in CLR. If that does not fix it, the glass has been etched by standing water, the dishwasher, etc. and all the home remedies are a waste of time. CLR will not harm the glass. All the other things people use do nothing 99% of the time. You are just wasting time and money. If CLR doesn’t work, the only solution is professional re-polishing. That is expensive and takes time. It is only worth doing on valuable (monetary or sentimental) items.
There you have it folks. If you try out this method, take some before and after pics and share them on our Facebook page if it worked.
