What happens at a depression glass meeting you ask? When do such meetings take place? The Michigan Depression Glass Society holds a depression glass meeting the first Monday of every month (except July and August) at the Livonia Senior Center at the southeast corner of Five Mile and Farmington in Livonia, Michigan. General meetings start at 7:00pm, but beforehand there is a buy/sell time where MEMBERS offer glassware for sale (this starts at 6:00pm).
Anyone is welcome to attend a meeting and see what we are all about. If you enjoy yourself and want to keep coming back, we encourage you to join our club ($15 for regular membership or $12 for seniors) as these membership dues help pay for the meeting space we rent.
These depression glass meetings consist of a short business meeting, table setting presentation, short coffee/cookie break, and themed program.
- Table Setting Presentations: At each meeting, a member will bring in a few place settings of a pattern they collect, along with the accompanying service pieces. After a brief history of the glass company that made the pattern, the person will show their pieces, talk about which ones are harder to find, and tell the story of how they started collecting that particular pattern.
- Themed Programs: After the coffee break, we have a themed program. This is generally where everyone brings in a piece from their collection that surrounds a particular theme. Examples include glass made by a particular company (Cambridge, Fostoria, Anchor Hocking), colors (pink, green, blue, yellow), items (reamers, butter dishes, sherbets), etc.
The September meeting is a special catered anniversary dinner that is still held at the Livonia Senior Center. Everyone brings in a place setting of their own depression glass dishes to eat off of. After dinner, we have a “find of the summer” program where everyone brings in their best purchase from their summer shopping. The December meeting is the annual Christmas dinner (held at Park Place in Dearborn). Here everyone brings in a candlestick to light while we dine. Afterwards, a glass auction is held where each member may bring in 2 lots to auction off. Both of these dinner meetings require advanced tickets.
Guests are welcome to attend any depression glass meeting. We hope to see you there!
